Modern Family Crisis

I wrote this song about my sister whose marriage was on the rocks. When she announced their separation and divorce, the rest of the family, and myself in particular, were left devastated. Meanwhile, “stuck there in the middle of it” was their beautiful young daughter who couldn’t seem to make it make sense. So she rebelled and became a difficult child/ young adult. It happens all too often these days, but it was unexpected back then. – Stevie J

MODERN FAMILY CRISIS

Stevie J Mayer

Poor Mister Johnson, he had a good wife but she’s gone now
She caught him cheating, so she told a few lies of her own now
But stuck there in the middle of it
Is a little girl who can’t seem to fit
And she’s seen it all in her parent’s eyes
With their poisoned words and she shuts her eyes
And cries work it out now
Work it out, work it out, work it out, work it out now!
But it just goes on and on
This modern family crisis oh

She’s home from school now, and she switches on the box like a robot
Turns up the volume, and her mother belts her for it but so what?
And as she grows she retreats inside
And then hey presto, here’s a rebel child
And she’ll walk the streets and she’ll drag her feet
And come home late and then laugh in your face
You can’t work it out now
You can’t work it out, work it out, work it out, work it out now!
And it’s tearing you apart, this modern family crisis oh

And you ask yourselves now where did we go wrong?
We always did what we thought was best for you, oh

[INSTRUMENTAL]

So she grabbed her things, she said I’ve grown wings
And I’m outta here and the pain it brings
And I won’t be back, I don’t need that crap
‘cos I’ve found a man and we’ve made some plans
We can work it out now
We can work it out, work it out, work it out, work it out now!
And we’ll break out of this old, modern family crisis, oh

Modern family crisis, mmm
Modern family crisis, yeah
The modern family crisis, ooh
