Learning To Fly

In the music business there is a saying; “you can’t polish a turd”
This is a song I had sitting around for decades unfinished because it was, in my view, a turd of a song that I could probably not finish. But lo and behold, with a little effort and determination I do believe I might have indeed ‘polished a turd”! Would love to know if you agree?

Quite a lot of people have said this reminds them of an @EltonJohn song. It was originally written around the time he released #KissTheBride, so I was probably influenced by that at the time.

LEARNING TO FLY

Stevie J Mayer

Everywhere I go these days I get a little left behind
It’s not like it was back in my day where is the end of the line
Everything that I believed has suddenly turned into lies
It’s time to look at life through a new set of eyes
It’s all about learning to fly

Life isn’t always easy or fair we play the cards we get
Some are born with a silver spoon others play the teachers pet
I was surrounded by beggars and fools
So I thought my oceans were dry
Now I’m living on faith and I’m learning to never say die
And now I’m really learning to fly

I’m learning to fly
I’ve never been this high
I’m takin’ it slow ‘cos I know it can change
In the blink of an eye
And finally I’m learning to fly

In generations long since past people went without
And everything was built to last and now they just throw it out
I try to rise above it all it’s only one piece of the pie
And like a bird in the nest I know I belong in the sky
And now I’m really learning to fly

I got my wings now I’m in heaven
And I know this is not the end

‘Cos I’m learning to fly I’ve never been this high
I’m takin’ it slow ‘cos I know it can change
In the blink of an eye
And finally I’m learning to fly

Mmm I’m learning to fly
And I stop asking why
Yeah I’m learning to fly
