Lock The Door & Hide The Key

A rowdy blues foot stomper that I wrote around a camp fire years ago. I had it in mind to play a feel-good song from someone like Anson Funderberg or Muddy Waters. But since I couldn’t remember the words to any of their songs, I wrote this on the spot. That’s the thing with the blues, the music is interchangeable and many songs, even by the same artists do sound the same, it’s usually only the story that changes. This one captures that call and response style of blues that is so loved by crowds. – Stevie J Mayer

LOCK THE DOOR AND HIDE THE KEY

Stevie J Mayer

Well your mama tell me you’re no good
She say you don’t come home all night
Yeah your mama tell me you’re no good
She say you don’t come home all night
If you don’t come home tonight baby
I’m gonna be on that morning flight, that’s right

Yeah it’s high time little darlin’
You let me know what’s goin’ down
Yeah it’s high time little darlin’
I’m sick and tired of waitin’ round
I’ve come to this conclusion
There’s gonna be one less fool in town

So I’m ready for the airport, I’ve hailed a taxi cab
She comes runnin’ over, all in tears and lookin’ sad
She says “Baby don’t you leave me
I’ll treat you right my honey-bee”
And like a damn fool I believe her
Lock the door and hide the key

So the moral of this story, is simple as can be
If you want an apple, don’t buy a lemon tree
It’s high time little baby, I’m through with you mistreating me
(yeah I’m through with you mistreating me)
I was a damn fool to believe ya
Lock the door and hide the key

Lock the door and hide the key
(lock the door and hide the key)

I’m through with you mistreatin’ me
(lock the door and hide the key)

There’s somewhere else I wanna be
(lock the door and hide the key)

With someone else who’s good to me
(lock the door and hide the key)

I was a damn fool to believe ya
Lock the door and hide the key
Oh, come on

Ooh, I was a damn fool to believe ya
Lock the door and hide the key
Ooh yeah, get on home girl
Stay away from me
Someone loves ya somewhere… ha!
